When the opponents interfere after our strong 1NT opening, we have an additional option — we can choose to double and try to beat our previously available scores through penalties. We would like to keep as many of our previous options — compete, invite, or force to game — as possible. When space dictates that one of them is lost, it is always the invitational sequence. With those hands, you will often be well served to choose to defend.
